Center Hosts “New Challenges of Leadership” Event Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C.

COLLEGE PARK, Md., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will launch a new Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) on Oct. 1 with a daylong event in Washington, D.C. Lockheed Martin Chairman and CEO Bob Stevens will keynote the event. The new center is focused on producing vanguard research and programs to foster effective leadership, build organizational capabilities for innovation and change, and promote social stewardship in organizations. The center is supported by BB&T, which pledged $1.5 million over 10 years in this effort.

“Effective leadership that encourages innovation is more critical than ever, especially for organizations operating with constrained resources and with the global economy in flux,” said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. “The Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change will translate our faculty’s scholarly research and practical expertise into insights all leaders can use – whether they lead corporations, government agencies or nonprofits.”

The event, “The New Challenges of Leadership: Public and Private Sector Perspectives,” will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Senior business, government and nonprofit executives will explore various aspects of leadership and how to meet challenges through innovation.

Stevens will serve as the lunch keynote and address “Developing Leaders,” sharing Lockheed Martin’s approach to cultivating managerial talent needed to steer the organization ahead through dynamic and turbulent times. Other speakers include Deborah Adler Myers, executive vice president of programming for Discovery Communications’ Emerging Networks; Alan Gregerman, author and CEO of VentureWorks; and Susan Schwab, former U.S. Trade Representative.

The globally recognized faculty researchers at the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change are forging new approaches to leadership and management through the center’s strategy to connect theory and practice on leadership. With exceptional research and related programs, activities and events, the center serves a broad audience of executives, managers, scholars, instructors, students and alumni.

Pat Stocker was named the executive director of the center. She is also president of Stocker & Associates LLC, a consulting organization based in Bethesda, Md., which coordinates custom executive education programs. She has done extensive work for Marriott, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, Aetna Insurance and many other organizations. Stocker previously served for more than 10 years as associate dean and director of executive programs at the Smith School, where she also taught marketing. She received her Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Smith professors Kathryn Bartol, Susan Taylor and Paul Tesluk serve as co-directors for the center. Bartol is the Robert H. Smith Professor of Management and Organization and past president of the Academy of Management. Taylor is the Smith Chair of Human Resource Management and Organizational Change and a Fellow of the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Tesluk is the Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management and chair of the department of Management and Organization at Smith.

With support from BB&T, center activities will include the BB&T Colloquium on Capitalism, Ethics and Leadership lecture series, to begin in the spring; leadership development programs for students and practitioners; non-degree executive education programs; conferences and speakers series; and research collaborations with public- and private-sector organizations.

There are several social networks that webmaster are using, and suggesting to their clients to use, to increase online marketing exposure. We talked about Twitter in yesterdays article, and how it can help you generate traffic to your web site. There have been many networks of this nature that has cropped up, and many have come and gone. I’m sure there will be many more that will spring up over time. Today we want to share with you some information about the most popular social network program today: Facebook.

One of the advantages of Facebook, in addition to keeping in touch with your family and friends, you can actually promote your business. Whether your business is a product or service, you can use Facebook to your advantage in any of your marketing campaigns.

Some experts feel that within a very short time, it is possible that Facebook, Twitter and other major social networking organization will actually bring more traffic to a web site than Google. The jury is still out, on this claim. The social networking sites have a specific function, and the search engine, have a totally different purpose, when it comes to marketing. Each can be strong in their own right, or can be used in conjunction with existing strategies you presently use in your business.

Like anything else in our society, all things don’t work the same for all people. Facebook may work wonders for some people, while with others, it doesn’t work at all. You can give either Facebook or Twitter a try, and see if either or both, of these types of networking can help you generate traffic, for your business opportunity.

Facebook offers a bit more possibilities, while Twitter is more simplistic. However, both will probably give you some traffic that should help you with new contacts, which in turn will give you more opportunities to possibly close a sale. That’s what it’s all about anyway. I personally feel it’s worth the time and effort, to at least check out the features and benefits of both of these opportunities. It may work well for you.

Like with any other social networking opportunity, make sure you fine tune your profile with short, simple, accurate information. Make this a huge part of your project, making it easy for the readers to follow. The more interesting you make your profile, the more people will have an interest in following, what you have to say. Don’t forget to put your business opportunity URL’s somewhere in your profile. More that 80% of individuals don’t list their URL, and as a result, no one knows where to find them or their product.

With Facebook you can include not only text, but pictures as well. You can also post some informative videos and others tabs of interest. Use your imagination here, there are all kinds of possibilities.

Building your network is important, if you’re going to use this type of media. You can invite unlimited partners, friends, acquaintances, as well as other people who may have similar interest. Be extremely cautious about any appearance of spamming here. Spamming is an instant turn off for most people, so use good judgment in this area of your new endeavor.

Writing and posting often is something, most people don’t do. The more you can keep your name, and your business opportunities name, in front of people, the better off you’ll be. Try to post everyday if at all possible. If you can’t post on a daily basis, then do it once a week maybe. But, keep in mind, keep active in your endeavors: the more often you can post, the more positive response you will get.

If you are the least bit paranoid, and don’t want your personal information spread all over the web, then this type of media, may not be for you. After studying the values of Facebook you may come up with a compromise, and be able to share only the information, you feel, will get the job done for you. You won’t know until you do your research, and actually see some of the positive results, this type of media can bring to your organization.
